Our House

Directions

In 2005 we started looking at mother/daughter houses in our area so that we could get a bigger house and Robyn's Mom (Marion) could get out of hers. Not seeing anything that looked like what we wanted we ended finding a piece of wooded property that had some potential.

Both houses sold quickly as we caught the realty market at its peak. Marion was lucky enough to rent from the new owner. But, the sale of the Murray house couldn't be put off. After putting everything into storage we moved into Marion's house for about a month. In September of 2006 we moved into the new house.

The new house is at a dead end near the top of a mountain of about 700 feet elevation just outside of Kingston. The ride up is very interesting because of its steep and winding roads. At first the ride seems difficult but it's much better than driving through the lights and stop signs we used to. You just have to watch out for the wildlife. Many visitors have asked about the roads in the winter but he town does an excellent job of clearing the snow.

Below is information about the various projects completed, ongoing and in planning.

Completed

Construction (7/06)
From the day we signed the contract to build, the house was finished about five months later. We had to move our belongings into storage as the old house was sold before the new house was ready. For the time line of events and pictures of the construction go here.

Driveway ( 7/06)

Paved the driveway in June 06. What a pleasure it is now. Sean will be extremely happy once the snow comes. Pictures and more details

Porch ( 7/06)

The porch floor consists of mahogany which was not coated and thus suffered some weathering over the winter. Lattice was also added underneath. Pictures and more details

Update : After the first winter found that the stain has weathered quite a bit and water stains are visible. Considering sanding again and applying a marine finish. ( 4/07)

Lawn  ( 7/06)

The property consists mainly of shale. The ground around the house was backfilled with crushed shale. In the spring of 2006 we had the property graded and soil brought in. Actually over 25 dump truck loads. Looked great until rains came which led to over four months of hard work of digging and landscaping. Pictures and more details

Retaining Wall ( 7/06)

The builder started a retaining wall but only went as far as he needed too. Sean completed the wall July 06. Pictures and more details

Garage (7/06)

Before anything was moved into the garage the floor was painted with an epoxy. One half of the garage is used for parking of Robyn's Mom's van. The other side will be Sean's work area. Once the storage shed is completed then the garage will get a make over. Pictures and more details

Ongoing

Basement (4/07)

The basement is currently being framed to create an office for Sean and a rec room. Most of the framing has been completed. Progress has stalled as the outdoor work as begun. Pictures and more details

Shed (8/07)
The shed has been delivered and is now stocked full. Only thing left is just some landscaping around it.
Pictures and more details

Landscaping (8/07)

Had some pine trees removed in June 07.

Redid the area at the end of the retaining wall. July 07 Pictures soon.

Swing Set (8/07)
Had built the swingset and was just about to dig the holes and wham a tree landed on the end of it. Have rebuilt the broken A-Frame. Now just have to find the time to put it back together and dig the holes. Pictures and more details.

Painting (2/07)

Waited almost a year to paint so that the house had a chance to settle. In August 06 we painted the kitchen, family room, all bedrooms, 2 of 3 bathrooms and downstairs hallway. We need still to paint the upstairs hallway, master bathroom, laundry room and living room.

Future Projects

Deck (4/07) - We are going to build a deck on the back of the house but not sure when it will be started. The plan is to include a roof because the deck is in full sun all day. Robyn has a concern that a roof might make the kitchen too dark.

Side Yard Retaining Wall or Fence (9/06)

There is a big drop off on one side of the yard and something needs to be done to provide a break. Sean is partial to knee high retaining wall but the others would like a fence. Have no idea as to when this will be started.
